Asbestos – The killer that still surrounds us!

With most cancers, it is hard to know the exact cause. For example, someone may get lung cancer, but not all lung cancer sufferers smoked. Mesothelioma is different.

In almost every case the cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.

All types of asbestos were banned by law in 1999, but because the incubation period for mesothelioma is often decades, cases are still being reported.

With an annual toll of about 2,500 deaths, this amounts to more than twice as many people dying from the disease, as die in accidents in motor vehicles.

Caution is still needed as asbestos continues to be found embedded in our homes, schools, offices and shops and more people die from exposure to it in Britain than anywhere else in the world.
